61) Message boards : Number crunching : BOINC priority settings question (Message 2707)
Posted 10 Jul 2016 by Profile vaughan
After many years of running BOINC I still am frustrated by its settings for task or project priority. For example, my Resource Share for SRBase is 100 and the Resource Share for Nanosurface is 75. The SRBase tasks are Riesel Base Short with an estimated run time on this Windows 7 PC of 49 seconds and a task deadline date of 11 July 2016 at 07:14am. The Nanosurface tasks' deadline is 18 July 2016 at 10:07am and the estimated run time is 3hrs 8 minutes.

Why is BOINC 7.6.22 allowing all of the Nanosurface tasks to run and not allowing any of the SRBase tasks to run?

Is there another setting I need to alter so that SRBase gets priority?

Hi Reb, sorry to bother you but can I request some tasks for the other sub-projects please? The limited access due to the recent server issues has meant some of my computers have run out of tasks and switched to my backup projects. Personally, I would like to achieve a few more badges here at SRBase.

SRBase site seems to be really slow tonight. Difficult to download / upload tasks and it is slow navigating to the server status page.

Do the server logs show any problems?

Thanks for the update KEP.

Can you provide an estimate on how long it will take to complete the project dataset given the current speed of computers. What I mean is Reb provides a time estimate with each batch of tasks he provides so maybe this can be extrapolated to cover the set. eg Project estimated completion date: 31st Dec 9999 :)
65) Message boards : Number crunching : credits (Message 2618)

There is two types of persons here: one looking for prime, and second looking for credits, badges , and so on.

I've given up on credits almost entirely. I crunch for credits until I get 25,000 then I crunch for hours. I've reached that milestone on nearly all my active projects. Badges will happen along the way. Finding a prime is a delicious bonus.

I'm a third variation!

I initially crunched to reach a personal target 1M in the project. Then on reaching that it was to get 10M per sub-project - this is still a work in progress and is taking a very long time. To assist the process I have purchased several Xeon class server CPUs (such a shame the SuperMicro motherboards are so expensive when the CPUs are reasonably priced).

My preference is for shorter running tasks as I prefer to run my computers at idle speeds overnight so I can sleep. If a challenge is on however, I'll run my farm flat out 24/7 as I'm super competitive :)

I totally agree with Steve Hawker's observation that "finding a prime is a delicious bonus".

Hey Reb, can we get some more Riesel base shorts and also some Sierpinski tasks too please?

Reb can we get some more tasks please, perhaps in something other than Riesel Base. My machines are bored with those tasks :)

Is the host still a Virtual Machine in a laptop? Maybe try a laptop cooling fan as well as under clocking.

I am seeing an error message:

[error] can't create task for "taskname"
[error] exceeded limit of 1800 slot directories

EDIT:
Arch Linux dual socket Xeon E5-2692 V2 (Ivy Bridge) 24 core running BOINC 7.6.6

Why is there a limit on tasks being downloaded?

What is this limit ie, how is it calculated?
71) Message boards : Number crunching : How do i know if i found a prime? (Message 2268)
Posted 15 Jan 2016 by Profile vaughan
I'd like to know the total quantity of primes I've found. Maybe two lists:
1. Riesel Primes
2. Sierpinski Primes

Is this possible?

Also, can you clarify the differences between the various Average task length sub-projects? Why or how are they different from each other?

Also, can you tell us if it is only the Long running tasks that are Top 5000 Prime list candidates?

We ran out of the nice short tasks again.
73) Message boards : Number crunching : View tasks error (Message 1603)

When I attempt to view tasks from the my account page : Tasks - View I get an error message:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 536870912 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 2 bytes) in /home/boincadm/projects/sr5/html/inc/db_conn.inc on line 119

If I go to each computer and view them individually I can see the tasks

We are running low on tasks again. Like the short tasks, abhor the long runners!

I have no idea what an inode is but know that there are plenty of tasks that need llr'ing that are being held up at the moment.

Why run the project as a virtual machine? Are computers that scarce that one cannot be put full-time on this project?

Darn no work again ... CPUs idle "not happy Jan"

I also don't understand why reducing the time helps us to get long running tasks back any earlier.
I have a bunch of R648 tasks that seem to be stuck at 99.999% with time remaining 00:00:00 with a running time so far of over 45 minutes.
