1) Message boards : News : short server outage tomorrow - preparing RMA (done) (Message 8202)
Posted 28 Apr 2022 by Profile Mankka*
I have got a confirmation from the vendor to return the broken RAM module for RMA.

There is a must to send back the complete affected KIT.

Tell them to get lost, send the broken chip back only. You have no legal obligation to send back working devices.

+1

They tried the same on me here & I told them to take a hike!
I will only send you back the faulty one so I'm still able to run the computer.
And they had no other choice than to accept it!

I can check this with the last stats file I have copied.

and done

Thanks Reb, everything looks spot on =)

Are any of the results returned after the 2020-02-02 backup usable or do they need to be recalculated again?

5) Message boards : Number crunching : Work available? (Message 3060)
Posted 19 Nov 2016 by Profile Mankka*
Status page says there are 775k tasks available but I cannot get any. What's up?
Preferences are set to every sub-project except average and long.

Its the caching problem for the feeder (small runtimes). If a lot of hosts are trying to get some work the server cant produce enough in cache. I will change the prio for this app maybe this can help a little bit.

I hope you can do something about it in the future.

As I'm currently running the PG challenge (ok, my AMDs sucks in that one),
I put my daily cache buffer down to 0.01 days, and with this "issue" of not
getting new SR tasks, my boxes will run dry very fast...

But focus on the VM problems first Reb ;)

Have a nice weekend all & cheers !

About GPU. The kind of sieving and primality testing we are doing here, does not yet do very well or efficient on a GPU. It however appears that there could be something in the making for a GPU equivalent to sr2sieve, as per a post by Ken at Primegrid, however I'm not sure what status is on that development. Nor do I know weather that GPU sieve only covers base 2 or all bases that we are searching. Anyway, there for sure is a mayor boost to our search, if or when GPU's can be used to start up bases.

If that could be done in here, I'd be more than happy to move my GPUs over to this project =)

Posted 29 Sep 2016 by Profile Mankka*
Reb can't upload new work for an app until all old ones are returned & at the moment the only empty ones are Sierpinski Base - short & Sierpinski / Riesel Base - average3.

So we'll have to go by that...
10) Message boards : Number crunching : A little helping hand to our visiting friends from France (Message 2914)
Posted 24 Sep 2016 by Profile Mankka*
I noticed from your forum that you're struggling with the name of the apps, so here we go:

Sierpinski / Riesel Base = srbase
Riesel Base = srbase2
Sierpinski Base = srbase3
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - short = srbase4
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - long = srbase5
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - average = srbase6
Riesel Base - short = srbase7
Sierpinski Base - short = srbase8
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - average2 = srbase9
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - average3 = srbase10
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - long2 = srbase11
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - long3 = srbase12

So an app_config.xml file for all apps would look like this (with the max_concurrent value set to what you prefer)

<app_config>

<app>
<name>srbase</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase2</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase3</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase4</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase5</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase6</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase7</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase8</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase9</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase10</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase11</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

<app>
<name>srbase12</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
</app>

</app_config>

But I really hope many of you will continue crunching SRBase after your raid is over =)

11) Message boards : Number crunching : Riesel Base - long0.18 (Message 2900)
Posted 22 Sep 2016 by Profile Mankka*
@Viking69: This ongoing R1024 batch is VERY a demanding one on the CPUs.
It can easily run 30h+ on a bit slower (AVX based) CPU, wouldn't even try to run them on the slower ones (ok, I have HT on (Intel) as I still need to feed the GPUs).

But I use the preferences to set up the right application depending on the box, no use to run too big ones on slower boxes, they won't make it in time.

It's also good to check out Reb's predicted (tested I guess, pls correct me if I'm wrong) times when bases are loaded and the Server Status page when they are running (the times usually get longer towards the end of the batch (not so much with the short ones)).

And as we are doing very different ones, even within the same application, the Boinc client won't be able to "learn" predict the right time...

@STE\/E: Dunno what application(s) you are running atm, but why not run some longer ones until the DNS problems are solved ?
(up/downloads still working fine in Finland).

Edit: Have you changed the domain address to http://srbase.my-firewall.org/sr5/ ?
(no idea if the old one is still working)

Strange... ok just got home from work & ok, I'm running Sierpinski / Riesel Base - long ones on many boxes and they take a while to complete ;)

But I checked the logs of those ones running shorter Sierpinski / Riesel Base - short ones, and couldn't find any problems during the day in Finland ?
16) Message boards : Number crunching : New Badges/Bonus Points ? (Message 2775)
Posted 27 Jul 2016 by Profile Mankka*

Yes, I would this too but there are several problems you have read in news. I must run all WUs dry before I can do all changes to the new project url. Also I must wait for all WUs coming back to check the results and add a new base / range.

I guess you could put up multiple ones for each category as you have done with the Average ?

Then you could prepare & upload a new batch while the other one is still running ?

Ok, a bit off the topic...
17) Message boards : Number crunching : New Badges/Bonus Points ? (Message 2772)
Posted 27 Jul 2016 by Profile Mankka*
Hi All !

Just throwing this out as an idea for discussion.
As most of you know, we have a "Hall of fame" thread in the forums where found primes etc. are listed.
http://srbase.myfirewall.org/sr5/forum_thread.php?id=157

They are divided into 4 categories: Base solved, Megaprimes, Top 5000 & Primes.

Suggestions:

1. Bonus points for found Primes depending on how long/demanding they are.

2. New Badges for each category with the number of the amount found in each category on the Badge.

I don't know if that's possible as the Badges are static .png files or could it be done in some other way ?
Also I don't think different colours within a certain range as normally would work as the amount of finds is so small ?

This may courage crunchers to run more and/or longer ones to find the Primes.

Just an idea, so what do you guys think ?

Thanx Reb !

So far everything looks ok & works fine, but of course it's hard to tell as there are so many results with the short ones, but it seems ok :)

...you have deserved a cold beer at this point =)

(but you may need to switch to a "real" server in the near future)

...well, at some point (and VERY soonPLS) you will have to ban him for a while, as it's messing up the whole project (stalled up/downloads, report problems, Boinc client backing off for 24 hrs...), as it's not nice if He's not serious about crunching the wus, sorry !
