1) Message boards : Number crunching : credits (Message 2607)

There is two types of persons here: one looking for prime, and second looking for credits, badges , and so on.

I've given up on credits almost entirely. I crunch for credits until I get 25,000 then I crunch for hours. I've reached that milestone on nearly all my active projects. Badges will happen along the way. Finding a prime is a delicious bonus.

Reb,

+1 for no CreditNew

On the topic of credits, can you comment on the variation in cr/hr? I'm seeing this on my MacBook Pro:

Riesel Base v0.01 35
Riesel Base - short v0.01 16
Sierpinski / Riesel Base v0.02 20
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - average v0.01 41
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - long v0.01 20
Sierpinski / Riesel Base - short v0.01 31
Sierpinski Base v0.01 73
Sierpinski Base - short v0.01 18

I will change the value to 2 for the next WUs. All results which are over the deadline should get credits too and not invalid.

Thank you.

You haven't come close to explaining why a short deadline is needed.

plain simple: only after the last wu of a batch has been returned, the results can and have to be evaluated manually.

after that the next batch can be prepared and started.

not that hard to understand - isn't it?

No, easy peasy.

Where's the bit that says it needs to be be done NOW and not tomorrow?

Well, if we'll never really understand then the rest of your post is redundant. Still, lets have a go, eh?

I didn't say don't return work to the server, I suggested more patience would be appreciated.

The concept is simple. Need to eliminate candidates before taking the next step. Sure, I think we all get that. But the process still doesn't demand a short deadline. What's the big hurry?

Its not as if there is some shortage of other bases or other forms to be crunched, especially now Reb has sorted out multiple bases.

The process just doesn't need short deadlines. This isn't even approaching a systemic need.

Reb,

I don't really understand the need for short deadlines. These prime numbers have been there for an awfully long time and a few days isn't going to make any difference in the long run.

Having said that, you might find fewer WUs timeout if the DCF is corrected. My last batch of long tasks came in with estimates of less than 3 hours yet have taken up to 15 hours to crunch. BOINC wouldn't have downloaded so many had the estimate been more accurate.

Then again, you may be struggling with the same problem as at PG - there isn't a sub-project DCF. Beats me how there wasn't one from the start of BOINC and it's even more incomprehensible that there still isn't.

Okey Dokey, lets find some primes!

Sub app is only counting for new WU.
Are you going to update sub app stats with 'old' WU?

not possible.

How about with the WUs that are still in the db?

I've got almost enough for a bronze on long tasks so that would be appreciated :)
9) Message boards : Number crunching : Work available?? (Message 425)

If there is no work, crunchers will turn to other projects with continuous work and maybe not come back.

I see this sentiment stated on almost every new project at some point. Heck, I might even have said it myself.

It's an interesting supposition but realistically false. If it were true then there would be quite a few projects that are only crunched by a mere handful of people - sort of secret acolytes. But there aren't.

What happens is that when work dries up, people don't detach or set NNT - they just open up other projects and wait patiently for work to magically appear. This is what the majority of people do - set and leave.

Its only a very small percentage that fiddle around with settings and projects and WUs. An even smaller percentage actually bother to post on the forums

Anyway, it's clear that people are content with the way Reb is running HIS project because every batch sells out. I'm OK with it. I'd prefer a longer deadline so I don't have to monitor my crunchers so closely (I'm currently on a WUProp star hunt) but I'm just happy to have another project to run however Reb wants to run it.

Join in, don't join in. Choice is a wonderful thing.

Just a quick idea - can badges be added to SRBase? I'm just thinking that other projects havebecome popular because of badges, and I think it would be a cool idea for SRBase to have them. Is this possible, reb?

Possible yes....

Reb,

How about this for a badge design? Very cool, very, very cool....

Obviously I leave the final design and the badge levels up to you :)

I'd be happy with a list in my account of the primes that I've found.

Submission to any external database is a bonus.

any chance of creating a page that lists all the primes found per base?

would be cool to know if you've found a prime...

Seeing as these tasks seem to be quite short, any plans for an Android version?

There is no android versions for llr.

Can you try to edit your client_state.xml and change the <rsc_fpops_bound>8.2548e14</rsc_fpops_bound> to a much higher level e30?

I think the limit was not enough. Just for testing.

I could not find "rsc_fpops_bound" in the client_state.xml for any srbase tasks. In fact, I see no sorbs tasks at all. I see all the tasks for all the other projects that are downloaded to my machine. Andy I see their rsc_fpops_bound values. Very odd!

In the next batch I will raise the limits. This could help.

I found rsc_fpops_bound and edited it to 8254800000000000000000000.000000 {I added 10 zeroes}

I unsuspended a WU and it finished without any problem. So it did help to edit this parameter

Here's the task: http://srbase.myfirewall.org/sr5/result.php?resultid=81082

You'll probably already know this but the tasks have an estimated duration of 0:00 and go to 100% immediately. I guess some other parameters need adjustment too.

Sorry...

Fri Dec 12 11:46:25 2014 | SRBase | Scheduler request failed: HTTP file not found

Do I need to do reset the project?

No.

I just tried to get work and still got the HTTP file not found

So I reattached and now I'm getting work. W00t!!
