Is it just me, or is there currently no work available? None of my systems are able to get more work right now. Checking on the server status I see everything is online, but no more work ready to be sent... I am reading that correctly? Could be that I have no clue what I'm talking about :)

Why is there a 24 hour deadline for S873 (n-50-100K)? when R663 has a 4 hour deadline for the same range of N?

If users can only get 2 w/u's per core, why the huge time period to return a work-unit. I read in another thread that no new work is loaded until all w/u's are returned....

Why not just set a 30 minute deadline?

There are also some slower hosts.

What is the point in waiting to send out new WUs, until the processed ones are returned? They are not depending on each other, are they?
It seems like wasted time to me.
Some units will never be processed, so they have to time out.
Again, total waste of time.

When a prime is found for a certain base, those additional w/u's for that specific K for which the prime was found can be removed from the LLR candidate file. When N gets larger this becomes far more important.

No nobody wants to crunch w/u's that have no importance...

As for those hosts that have "slower" computers.... Perhaps they should modify their preferences to crunch the shorter tasks? Primegrid forbids people with Pentium D processors from crunching SoB and GenferWR w/u's...

I know this project is expected to "last years" for all the bases up to 1030, but I am hopefully foolish that we can start knocking down bases within 2-3 days... We just need the work and deeper sieves.

Rebirther & all the guys over at Mersenne Forum who made this project possible - THANK YOU. This project kicks ass!

GIVE US MORE WORK!!!!!

Why waste of time? The timeout units will be send out again. Yes I know there is a lack of time to load new WUs but there are many bases need to checking the results, testing runtimes for fixed credits, reserving and and and...

It is a waste of (your) time, because, while waiting for tasks to be returned, the next lot could be processed.
If there is no work, crunchers will turn to other projects with continuous work and maybe not come back.

I see this sentiment stated on almost every new project at some point. Heck, I might even have said it myself.

It's an interesting supposition but realistically false. If it were true then there would be quite a few projects that are only crunched by a mere handful of people - sort of secret acolytes. But there aren't.

What happens is that when work dries up, people don't detach or set NNT - they just open up other projects and wait patiently for work to magically appear. This is what the majority of people do - set and leave.

Its only a very small percentage that fiddle around with settings and projects and WUs. An even smaller percentage actually bother to post on the forums

Anyway, it's clear that people are content with the way Reb is running HIS project because every batch sells out. I'm OK with it. I'd prefer a longer deadline so I don't have to monitor my crunchers so closely (I'm currently on a WUProp star hunt) but I'm just happy to have another project to run however Reb wants to run it.

Join in, don't join in. Choice is a wonderful thing.

Agreed. A big thank you is certainly in order. I feel guilty now for having even started this thread :| Being fairly new to all this, I wasn't sure if I had gotten everything on my end setup correctly or not. So, ya, my apologies. And Thank You for an awesome project. Glad to be a part of it!

I'm glad that more and more of you show understanding for Reb.

Thank you Reb for taking the time to understand the needs for searching the conjectures in a cost efficient aswell productive way. This site has really boosted many bases that would have been long abandoned by the few steady crunchers that CRUS has at the mersenneforum.

To all the crunchers, patient or impatient, please understand this... CRUS may be the biggest project the world has ever seen. There remains litterally trillions of untested k's for bases<=1030 and a lot of these k's (several millions) will need a megaprime, before they finally primes and propably thousand of k's will need a billion digit prime, before they can be removed from the conjectures. So as all of you may understand, even though we periodically runs out of work, in the future it will not be a problem, since testing times will increase from few minutes to several hours and eventually days for each test. So basically as I see it, the running out of work issue is litterally because this project is such brand new as it is :)

Also an important message to prime searchers can be, grow fond with patience, it is your best travel companion, when waiting for your first or next prime to show up :)

Thanks everyone for supporting this great project.
